Boone is “The Heart of the High Country!” Watauga County’s courthouse is centered in Boone as is Appalachian State University. We think it’s the prettiest of North Carolina’s universities. It certainly lends a youthful flavor to Boone and that culture is evident in the town’s restaurant and bar scene. From Boone you can easily go north along the New River into Ashe County and the Jeffersons. Many ride the road bikes up there along Railroad Grade Road. Watuaga Lake is just west for boating adventures. South are Blowing Rock, Foscoe, Linville, Sugar and Beech Mountains. We’re an outdoorsy town so bring your hiking gear in summer and snowboards in winter. The South Fork of the New River runs right through town and the Greenway Trail is a great way to walk it. Anywhere near Boone, you’ll revel in the great outdoors!
